Manufactured Nostalgia

Though the incident did not occur and she was not my fourth grade teacher, everything is true.

Fourth Grade

for Anne Mary (Sister Celine) Wuebbels
(27 Nov. 1900-19 Apr. 2006)

Smooth surface,
blackboard,
extends outward
from the tip of my nose
infinite in all directions.

Behind me,
eighty-two eyes
and restless shuffling,
muffled giggles.

Slow minutes tick past,
building to hours.
Then the classroom empties,
fades to darkness,
pinks in pre-dawn light.

Months become years.
Scent of chalk
permeates all.

I stand waiting
for Sr. Celine to say
in her dry, dagger voice,
“You
may
sit
down.”
