For Grandma’s Birthday

Summer, 1967
for Pearl M. (Donjon) Ryan Alexander (1903-1986)

Grandma Pearl’s curled hair
dyed dark gray
frames the cat-eye glasses
around her own eyes, brown
and alive.

Her head tilted
slightly to the side,
she flashes a smile
below her aquiline nose
because the child
of her child is carried
through the doorway, returning
a smile for her.

I reach
and almost touch her face
through the cold,
lettered marble.
