Artist at Work

—for Leisha

The mass arises,
red, moist,
into a human form.

Arms, legs,
fingers, toes,
the subtle, tensed muscle
holding a pose.

Personality is birthed
by fingertip
and craft stick,
a light sheen of water

Small pieces built
on a generic bulb
become nose, lips,
brow, worked
into a face,
yet growing
out from it.

Photographed for posterity,
she is admired the day long,
then mashed down
into her original lump, rolled
into the primordial ball
of clay,

latent energy
in some new form.
