Tuvalu

“Eight standing together”
plus one. Nine islands
of white and tan sand,
palm trees,
and thatched roof
longhouses
make for lovely postcards.

The nation now sports
eighteen villages
and neighborhoods
(some with grid streets
and modern buildings),
free education,

a $50M windfall
engineered
by the dotcom gods
who decreed them “.tv”

and a massive trash dump
at the north end
of Funafuti island.

A Pacific paradise
with a poverty
of natural resources:

it is
fourth smallest in size,
third smallest in population,
second lowest
to the ocean.

Most everywhere
is somewhere
you’ve never been
and someone
calls it home.

  1. Pave paradise, put up a parking lot. Or trash dump, as the case may be. Thanks for this, Matt. You forced me to learn something, as I went and looked the place up after reading this.
