Ghost Signs

Faint hieroglyphs
fuse with the brick,
glow from within
their rectangular cartouches,
announce

King Bee Hats,
A. Jacobs Dry Goods and Shoes,
Mound City Buggy Company.

Ancient pharaohs of commerce,
their palaces and temples
ransacked, reused to other ends,
only these few leave their names
above the door.
